Method
We establish the conductor route, connect the transmitter and use the A-frame to compare fault direction and signal magnitude along the route.
The method applies to faults that leak enough current into the ground. We qualify the result and mark a narrowed repair area when the signal supports it.

The boundary
Not every electrical failure creates a locatable cable-to-ground signal. Open circuits, equipment failures, multiple faults, earth bonds, pavement, very dry ground and cable construction can affect the result.
Fault locating narrows the search area. It does not guarantee an exact point or establish the condition of the rest of the line.
