What changed
Vivax-Metrotech validated Swift Navigation's Skylark Precise Positioning Service for its vLoc3 RTK-Pro receiver — described as the first utility locator to fully integrate precise GNSS with real-time kinematic correction. Why the base-station detail matters
Centimetre-level GNSS is not new. Needing no local base station is the practical change. Setting up and tearing down a base, or arranging network RTK access, is a real cost on a short job — enough that on small locates the position usually got captured by tape and sketch instead, or not at all.
Remove that overhead and it becomes reasonable to georeference every mark on every job, not just the ones that justified a survey crew.
What it does not change
It is worth being precise about what improves here, because it is easy to oversell.
Better positioning improves where the mark is recorded. It does not improve whether the interpretation under the mark was correct. A distorted field, a coupled signal, or a ghost from an adjacent line will be recorded to two centimetres just as faithfully as a good trace.
Nor does it move the quality level. Under ASCE/UESI/CI 38-22, surface geophysical designation is Quality Level B regardless of how precisely the resulting mark is surveyed; Quality Level A requires exposing the utility. 3Jump to source 3 A two-centimetre coordinate on a QL-B designation is a well-surveyed QL-B designation.
What to ask a provider
- Is positioning captured for every marked point, or only for selected points?
- What coordinate system and datum is the deliverable in?
- Does the deliverable distinguish surveyed marks from sketched ones?
- Does it record investigated-and-found-nothing areas, or only hits?
- What quality level is being claimed per segment, per ASCE 38-22?
